Anna is a social scientist and a New York Times bestselling author. She has written two books so far. The first was The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation—which includes a lot of fascinating original research. And more recently, she wrote Erased: What American Patriarchy Has Hidden From Us.

Anna and I are both interested in questions about systems and stories. Where do our systems come from? How do we inherit culture without even realizing it? What are the stories we tell ourselves and one another about the systems we’re a part of? We’re also interested in how powerful—and empowering—it can be for us when we become aware of the cultural forces that shape our worldview.

Today, we talk a little bit about all of this—along with some 80s TV characters and family myths many of you will recall.
