Eric is such a wise, helpful, and truly fun teacher. You may know him from his long-running podcast The One You Feed, which is wonderful. And I just read and loved his new book, which is called How a Little Becomes a Lot: The Art of Small Changes for a More Meaningful Life. Like everything Eric does, this book and his approach to change is full of nuance and complexity—but then he also has all these really practical and useful tools.

Today, we talk about what Eric has learned about how we can best create meaningful, lasting change in our lives. He draws from varied research, philosophies, and teachers, as well as his own life and a particular dark night of the soul he experienced—years ago, Eric was addicted to heroin, which we talk a bit about today.

Eric has a particularly helpful way of thinking about the relationship and tension between our values and desires, and what we might do when they seem to clash with one another. I think he also has a really healthy grasp on the role that self-control and motivation play in our lives. And, the next time you feel like you’re getting off track—Eric has a very useful, and non-judgemental way of seeing this, and coming back to where you want to be.
